A dear friend Sharon invited my husband and me to stand up in her wedding to her boyfriend of many years Johnny in the quaint island of Mackinac. The theme of the event was “At Last” by Etta James. The theme was a source of good natured laughs during the weekend. Mackinac Island continued my summer travel last year of stepping back in time. There are no cars on the Island – just horse and buggy. What a treat! The crown jewel of Mackinac is the Grand Hotel built in 1887. The hotel reminds visitors of the grace and relaxed pace of yesteryear. Grab a rocking chair on the expansive front porch, order some lemonade, chat, and enjoy the majestic views. For dinner, make a dinner reservation at the Woods. It is a 20 or 30 minute scenic carriage ride to the restaurant which feels like a cozy Swiss chalet nestled among the woods. It is a romantic setting to be sure. The food is good but the atmosphere is what is memorable. After dinner, head back to The Grand for their orchestra and plenty of dancing. Gentlemen bring your sport coat as the evening dress code requires it. The wedding, the dancing, the horse driven carriage rides – made me want to re watch the movie “Somewhere in Time.”
