A day at Scala dei Turchi – Turkish Steps

Scala dei Turchi is a memorable stop when visiting the area of Agrigento. The Turkish Steps is an area that Turkish pirates who pillaged the surroundings used as a safe haven for their boats. The unusual landscape is glaring as the sun bounces off the white limestone cliffs. There is a staircase clearly marked which leads down to the water. Bring your water sandals as the surface can be slippery and there are some rocks to walk over in the water. It makes a lovely spot for a picnic, though there are plenty of stands selling food and drinks. There are many locals rubbing the soft limestone into a paste as a body mask for healing properties and softer skin. There is also a lovely restaurant roadside to enjoy after your active climb up and down the stairs.
